Medical Assistance Voice Interactive System

Smart bottle caps and a voice assistant that help older adults take the right medication at the right time, and let the people who care for them know every dose was taken.

It works with the bottles people already have

No reloading pills into a machine. The caps screw onto standard pharmacy vials.

Reminds

When a dose is due, the cap on the right bottle lights up and Mavis says so out loud.

Answers

Ask "What is this pill for?" or "Can I take ibuprofen with it?" Mavis answers from FDA label information and names its source.

Confirms

Opening the bottle logs the dose. Family caregivers can see it, and get a note when a dose is missed or a refill is due.

A cap that reads the label out loud

For people who can't read small print, including people who are blind, have low vision or have trouble reading, the talking cap has three raised tiles you can find by touch.

One dot: the medication's name.

Two dots: how to take it, and what not to mix it with.

Three dots: side effects and the expiration date.

A "read the whole label" mode is designed to speak the pharmacy label word for word, in the order it is printed, as checked by the pharmacist.

Designed to be careful

  • Mavis answers only from FDA label information, and says where each answer comes from.
  • It never tells anyone to change, skip or stop a medication. Those questions go to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • For an emergency, it says to call 911.
  • The wake word is detected on the device. On the Full hub, speech and answers stay in the home.
  • Caregivers see dose information only when the person taking the medication agrees.
